My meandering in a world of dreams.
During my D&D years, I wrote a background for my game. I called it REM World and the gamers I took with me into that world really enjoyed it. But I think I enjoyed it even more then they did. Perhaps I will find a new audience here to share my world with.

THE BIRTH OF NEW REM

The first world of man was Rem-World. An extension of the world in which we live, this is the world where we dream. Here some of our dreams take shape and live. In this vast and beautiful world of our dreams, we find fairies, knights in shining armor, and our heroes play out myth and legend. Not all of our dreams are nice, sometimes we have nightmares. We all know that in the morning we always wake up to the light of day, don’t we?

Man or Mankind in our mundane world is a simple term used to describe human beings. In Rem-World “man/men” describes many creatures. The most numerous are the Humans. Humans come in all the different races found in the mundane world. Elves a branch of the race of man; are most like humans in appearance they also have the same internal organs and blood. But elves are by far more in tune with nature. The Dwarves like the Elves are another branch of man and creatures of the earth. Dwarves are at home deep below the surface of the world. Each racial branch has some physical and cultural differences but all are men.

The races of man and gods, Beings of power, demons, devils, Demonlords, monsters, and legendary and mythical creatures populate Rem-World. It is in Rem-World that fairies and pixies are to be found. Here also are unicorns and dragons. We of the “real world” only visit Rem-World in our dreams.

As with any world or nation where men live, the history of Rem-World is troubled with war. Mankind’s companion thru the ages is a beast carried on man’s collective backs called war. War, the cause of so very much of our pain and destruction. War is the bringer of chaos and a friend of death. In time this world with all of its wonders was destroyed by men. The few that survived migrated to a new world through the workings of mighty spells that opened gates from the dying world.

REM world fell into a war that moved across the whole world. This war grew until the entire world shook to its foundations. And still, the war grew in power and intensity. Great riffs and cracks formed, and Rem-world trembled and began to die. Within its depths, the great destructive energies collected and boiled. But the men who waged this war could not see past their own fury. There were others who did see and understood what was happening to Rem-world. The Teachers at Edge World, a place of great learning, watched, and were troubled by what they saw. They sent emissaries with dire warnings and pleas to stop the devastation. But the words of the wise Teachers fell on ears that could only hear an enemy. So, the emissaries were driven away and the war grew.

When the emissaries were driven away by the warmongers, they took up a new mission. They sought out the many victims of the war and took them to huge arcane gates. The gates led to a new world free of the warmongers. As the last of the war victims passed through the gates, the gates were closed and destroyed. Too late the warmongers realized their folly and they fled to the gates only to find them shattered. With a roar that made even the gods tremble in fear, the Warmongers of Rem-world and their terrible power passed into oblivion.

Sadly, the lesson was not learned.
