Brownies

I decided to make my new husband some brownies as a surprise. I had never actually made brownies. I loved brownies, just not cooking. Well, who needs to cook brownies? They sell brownies everywhere! But, of course, his mother had always made brownies “from scratch” and she had given me the recipe... I figured I might as well try it. It was going to be part of his birthday present, instead of a cake, brownies from his mother’s recipe, with candles! In my mind, it was very romantic.

I had to get out a real cook book to translate some of the directions. Fortunately, the husband also came with cook books. Like, what was a tsp? I was never interested in cooking, and since my older sister was, it never came up in my youth. Frankly I felt like it was kismet that I married a guy who loved to cook! I was actually sort of surprised he thought I should too.

Once I got all the stuff into the bowl and then into the pan (his mother’s old beat up brownie pan that came with the recipe...) I put it in the oven with a sigh of relief, and got on with the other surprise preps, balloons! I do love balloons! Did forget to set the timer.

The smoke was the clue. Not bad, a drip smoked first so there was unburned brownie, hard as a brick, but unburned. I couldn’t even cut it. It was one large, solid, pretty good smelling, inedible brick of brown. It did come out of the pan, so I still stuck a candle on top.

The birthday went well. I actually ended up getting the best gift, even though it wasn’t my birthday. My husband finally stopped expecting me to learn to cook.
