Life is Good

Janice sat in the courtroom waiting. Her stomach was full of butterflies but she looked calm, bored even. She was well practiced.

She felt like it had been years waiting for this case to come to court, really it had only been months. Megan had been arrested in January, it was July.

As she listened to the final arguments from each of the lawyers, it seemed that the prosecution had presented a pretty good case, defense not so solid. It actually didn’t look good for Megan.

Megan seemed a little scared too. Janice could tell by the way she was fiddling with the silver chain around her neck. Something she always did when she was nervous. They had been roommates long enough that Janice knew pretty much everything about Megan.

As the verdict was read, “Guilty,” Megan broke down, crying. Janice wanted to go over and comfort her, but she was surrounded by her lawyer and a bunch of officials. She’d go to wherever they took her later. It would work out better anyway.

As she left the courtroom, Janice relaxed breathing in the fresh cool air. Yes, Megan was going to prison. But she, Janice, had gotten away with everything. She didn’t really like Megan all that much anyway, the little snot.

Now she would find another job, another apartment, probably another name would be wise too, it usually worked out well that way. No hurry though, she had all the money she had secretly embezzled from Megan’s company to live off while she made her new plans. Life was good.

Well, life was good for Janice anyway.
