The Apple

“Ok, so that worked out well!” Jeff said.

“Wait, where’s my other one?” Jane asked.

“I got six, you got six,” Jeff said.

“Yes but you told me if I helped you I’d get the biggest share.”

“Well you got as many as I did, we both got the biggest share.”

“That’s not how it works. We’re equal, there is no biggest share if it’s equal. You said I’d get the biggest share. You owe me one.”

“I meant if it was unequal. If one pile was bigger, you’d get the biggest share. But they’re equal, so we both get the same.”

“That’s not what you said. You said if I helped you, I’d get the biggest share. I helped you, I get the biggest share. Hand one over.”

“But, they’re equal!”

“That’s not my problem. Are you going back on the deal? I’d hate to have to go home and tell my brothers that you didn’t keep your part of the deal. They tend to be very protective. If they thought you had lied to me to get me to help you, I don’t think they’d be very happy with you.”

“They’re equal!”

“Not my problem.”

“Fine!” Jeff handed over one of his apples, off he stormed.

Jane watched him go, smiling. If there was anything she learned from having two big brothers it was how to get her way.

As Jeff stomped away, he was also thinking. If it was the last thing he did, he was going to get the best of that smart aleck brat of a girl.

Eventually he did too. They grew up, and she became the best wife, the best mother for his three children, and his best friend for life. He never did really forgive her about that apple though...
