A Writer is Born

Jared looked at Ronnie, it’d been a long day and his mom wasn’t due back for an hour. He mentally kicked himself for agreeing to daycare today, but then, Ron’s mom was desperate. Her normal daycare woman’s car had died. It was going to take the woman all day to sort out the paperwork, and find another car. Ron’s Mom couldn’t stay home without causing a big ruckus at her work, she was in charge of some big ordeal that was happening today. Jared couldn’t just say no.

Now, they’d run out of things to do. The day was almost over, but not over. Not enough time for anything big, but nothing smaller was coming to mind.

“Tell me a story” Ronnie said, suddenly.

“You want me to read you a book?” Jared asked.

“No. I already read all my books. Tell me a story, make one up.”

Well! This was certainly different. Jared wasn’t sure what to do, but he felt confident he could make up a story for an eight year old. “Ok,” he said, then thinking for a minute, he started.

“Once upon a time there was a small giant,” Jared had no idea why he even said that, yet, as soon as he did, he thought of where it could go from there. As he talked, ideas started popping into his head, like popcorn! He even had to discard things that wouldn’t fit the way he now wanted the story to go. He seemed to know exactly where he wanted the story to go. Ronnie loved it! And by the end, Jared did too!

So, that very day, due to a broken car belonging to a total stranger, and a big work project being run by a single mother with no daycare, a writer was born.
