October 6. 2022 Writing Prompt
The veil between worlds shimmers
Strange scenes and voices overlap
Spinal fluid begins to wash over the brain
And then suddenly retreats back into ancient glands
Sleep is not achieved and the cleansing is incomplete

That infernal button on the console
Me, prostrate on the table
Horribly aware, yet as tired as the pyramids
My captors monitor all bodily functions on scrying screens of black
With the touch of a gloved finger I am dragged back to consciousness

They've been torturing me like this for days
Perhaps years, perhaps centuries
Time has no meaning here
Only what could be if they would let me dream
But my dreams are dangerous

The war for the future is fought in the mind
And I have been identified as an enemy combatant
I languish in a state between states
A prisoner of the panopticon of the psyche
There are many others just like me, but I have a secret

Those hideous devices have enslaved the prison keepers as well
The machine is now their master
Automatons and algorithms
Are no match for the strengthened soul
I project my dreams now without sleep

Shapes manifest on the modern obelisk
They morph and form ideas
Words scroll on the screen, seen but unseen by the technicians
A message of hope and resilience to the resistance
It's time to wake up
