Guys and Dolls

“Sand! Can you bring me the junk drawer pliers?” came a voice, up the cellar stairs. “I can’t find my other ones!”

“Sorry, Honey, I can’t leave the baby in her high chair. You’ll have to come up, or find yours!” Sandy yelled back.

“Just throw them down, I’ll catch them!” came the yell back.

“OK! Ready? One...two...three...four...”

“It’s one, two, three in a countdown, there’s no four!”

“Oh, OK. One, two, three..." she tossed them.

“Ouch! You don’t throw on three you throw after three!”

“You could have walked up the steps, gotten them yourself, and already been back to work by now,” she turned back to the baby who had obviously been delighted at all the yelling. “Your father, always building something weird.”

A week later there was a party, a very special girl turned one. Lindy sat in her high chair, delighted, as everyone came over to talk to her. Her parents, two sets of grandparents, two uncles, three aunts, and a bunch of cousins!

When the gifts came out, there was more excitement! New balls and wooden moveable toys. Two new dolls and a sturdy walker that looked like a shopping cart to help her practice walking while she played. And then Dad snuck off to the cellar, coming back with his latest construction.

A three-story dollhouse! Taller than Lindy standing up, and filled with tiny wooden figures and furniture. It was magnificent!

Within one minute standing next to it, Lindy stuck the figure of the father in her mouth and choked. After panic, and dislodging, they agreed she needed to be a little older before she could play with it.

It worked out well eventually, and Lindy was delighted to pass the dollhouse on to her first great grandchild! However, at Sara’s second birthday party...
