Flash Fiction
So

All the dogs were barking.

I woke from a deep sleep at the sudden noise, confused. For a moment I didn’t even know where I was. It was like waking from the dead, well…I imagine. I’ve never actually been dead. It was so dark in my room, which I suddenly realized I was in, that it was scary. The electricity had apparently gone out. The dogs barking made it scarier. They seemed to be outside though usually they’re downstairs, inside.

I sat there for minutes trying to calm down and decide what to do. Finally deciding to go downstairs and see if my parents were there. Their bedroom was downstairs so they should be there, or in the living room or the kitchen, or out trying to get the dogs back in.

Sneaking quietly out of my bed, I tip-toed downstairs. Still no lights, I flipped every switch on the way just to check. There was a breeze too, not something you usually feel in the house. As I passed the window halfway down where the stairs turned toward the living room, I glanced out the window and saw a flashing light in front of the house. Maybe there was an accident? Now panic hit.

The dogs were out, the lights were out. I couldn’t hear my parents talking so they were probably out too, what happened? I rushed the rest of the way down the stairs, but the more I went down, the more there were! I couldn’t seem to get to the bottom!

Suddenly my mother called me. “Jenny! What are you doing up?”

And I yelled at the top of my lungs, “All the dogs were barking.”

And she said, “We don’t have any dogs.”

And I woke up.

So… that’s it, no more pickles before bed.
