A Good Night

“Hurry up I’m getting soaked!”

“Me too!”

“Well, open the door!”

“I can’t!”

“Why not?”

“It seems to be locked!”

“What?”

“The door is locked!”

“No, it isn’t… Oh, it is! How did it get locked?”

“I don’t know, we never lock it.”

“Well, it’s locked now, did you lock the front door?”

“Of course, we always lock the front door.”

“Well, what do we do now?”

“We should have gotten a new lock when we lost the keys to the back door.”

“When you lost the keys…”

“You don’t need to rub it in.”

“Speaking of in, how are we going to get in? We’re getting soaked!”

“The cellar!”

“We haven’t opened that door in years…”

“Well it’s a door… let’s go.”

An hour later: “Try again!”

“There’s no reception down here! It’s not going to suddenly get reception! Why did you lock the cellar door anyway?”

“I saw a show on murders in the suburbs… and since when are you a phone expert!”

“Hold on, I hear something… It must be Kenny getting in from school. He’ll come in the front door, he has a key!”

Suddenly they heard shouting, “Mom! Dad! I’m sleeping at Eric’s tonight, we’re studying for the science test! Call me if you need anything!” and then a door slammed shut.

Andy looked at Celia, “We will never lock the cellar door again.”

“Agreed…”

“And we will get a new lock for the back door as soon as Kenny finds us tomorrow.”

“Agreed.”

And I will sleep on the work table and you can have the piles of laundry to sleep on.”

“No.”

“No?”

“We can share the laundry,” Celia said, “keep each other warm…”

“Awe, thanks Sweetie…” Andy said, with a shy smile.”

It turned out to be a very good night, indeed.
