In reality, the boom frightened me.
“No More Fireworks”
An imaginary college admissions essay
About overcoming obstacles
And being a valuable asset
To the good old team,
Titled like this,
Would be a good reply
For someone rebuilding burnt bridges.

Like, yes, I got in an argument when a big crowd came
To old Limekiln Lake on the 4th of July
And all the kids sat with ice cream and sparklers
Waiting for the big show and got
A disappointing puff of smoke-
But then pulled it together and saved the day
By taking the fireworks away
From someone who was doing it wrong.

Look what a strong set of skills
Sharp eyes and apt mind I have -
This I’d say- pointing out how all the parents
In just a split second switched from disappointed
To thoroughly thrilled - my goodness, it could be
Your college turned around like that!

Such an upbeat asset to the team -
No more fireworks till she
Single-handedly led a fireworks spree!

I was covering my ears, in reality,
Frightened by the “BOOM.”
