Different types of eating disorders and fact about them.


Eating disorders- A mental health issue that prevents from eating or overeating and can affect physical health.

Anorexia nervosa- People avoid food, severely restrict food, eat very little of certain food.

Might weigh themselves repeatedly and think they are overweight when they are dangerously underweight.

There are two types of anorexia nervosa- restrictive and binge-purge.

Restrictive- People severely limit the amount of food they eat.

Binge-purge- Eat severely restricted amounts of food they might also eat a lot of food in a short amount of time which can lead to vomiting, using laxatives, and diuretics to get rid of the food that was eaten.

Anorexia nervosa can be deadly due to health issues caused by starvation and suicide.

Symptoms- Extremely restricted eating, extreme thinness, a never-ending pursuit to be thin, not willing to keep a healthy and normal weight, major fear of gaining weight, disoriented body image, a self-esteem that is caused by body weight and shape, denial of the very low body weight.

Overtime symptoms- Thinning of the bones, mild anemia, muscle wasting and weakness, brittle hair and nails, dry and yellowish skin, growth of fine hair all over the body, major constipation, low blood pressure, slowed breathing and pulse, damage to the structure and function of the heart, brain damage, multiorgan failure, drop in internal body temperature making them feel cold all the time, lethargy, sluggishness, feeling tired all the time, infertility


Bulimia nervosa- Frequent episodes of overeating that is not normal which lead to force vomiting, excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, fasting, excessive exercise.

People with bulimia might be underweight, normal weight, or overweight.

Symptoms- Chronically inflamed and sore throat, swollen salivary glands in neck and jaw area, worn tooth enamel, increasingly sensitive teeth and decaying teeth from stomach acid, acid reflux disorder, other gastrointestinal issues, intestinal distress and irritation from laxative abuse, major dehydration from purging of fluids, too high or too low levels of sodium/potassium/calcium/other minerals that can lead to a stroke or a heart attack.



Binge-eating disorder- When people lose control over their eating and have recurring episodes of overeating.

Results- Overweight and obesity

Is the most common eating disorder in the U.S.

Symptoms- Eating in unusually large amounts in a very specific amount of time, eating when you are full or not hungry, eating quickly during binge episodes, eating until uncomfortably full, eating alone or in private to avoid embarrassment, feeling distressed, feeling ashamed or guilty about your eating, often dieting possibly without weight loss.



ARFID (Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder)- People limit the amount or type of food eaten.

People don’t get enough calories to grow properly and is often seen in children.

An adult with ARFID doesn't get enough calories to function right.

Symptoms- Dramatic restriction of types or amount of food eaten, lack of appetite or interest in food, major weight loss, upset stomach, abdominal pain, other gastrointestinal problems with no cause, picky eating gets worse.
