Farmer Brown Just Loved It

“It’s a mushroom,” said Eisha.

“No, I’ve seen mushrooms, and that is not a mushroom,” said Potsy

“I heard there are lots of kinds of mushrooms…”

“So, that looks like an apple or something. Aren’t mushrooms always soft and squishy?”

“An apple? When did you ever see an apple?”

“Well, I didn’t see one, I just saw a picture of one.”

“A picture? When did you see a picture?”

“One of the kids had a picture on its lunch box.”

“Oooh, remember when that kid left his lunch box here by accident? That stuff was yummy!”

“I do! But this was just a picture. But it did look like this thing.”

“Apple huh… Maybe apples are food?”

“Are you willing to try it?”

“Well, what have we got to lose? If it’s food we eat it and are happy. If it’s not food then we eat it and not be happy.”

“Does ‘not happy’ hurt?”

“I don’t know, I’ve never eaten anything that wasn’t food.”

“Ok, let’s try it.

And that was the day the two friends discovered apples. It was also the day Farmer Brown got an order for two fresh chickens. He grabbed Eisha, when Potsy wasn’t looking, and another unfortunate chicken who crossed his path. Potsy didn’t see that either. Potsy thought Eisha became invisible when she ate the apple.

Potsy spent the rest of her life talking to her invisible friend. Farmer Brown was afraid she was not well, because she cackled all the time, so he never sold her as food, just in case.

And that’s how Potsy set a record for oldest living chicken in Massachusetts. Not that she ever knew about it, but it made Farmer Brown quite famous for a very short period of time. Farmer Brown just loved it.
