Flash Fiction
And so it goes

Sam looked into the kitchen, Annie was sitting on the floor surrounded with parts, and papers. Against his will, he was required to ask. He was hungry and there would be no food until whatever this was, was finished.

“What ya got there?”

“Oh Sam! This is just what we needed! It’s an extra little closet that will fit right in that spot where we throw our boots. We can keep all the everyday things in it!”

“The everyday things...”

“You know salt, pepper, cereal, sugar and coffee, everyday things!”

“Oh yeah,” he added, looking around and not seeing any of those things out, so, they must already be somewhere… but, that was not the issue…

“Can I help?” he said, as his tummy grumbled.

“Yes, actually I was going to call you in…” she held up the paper, “This doesn’t make sense.”

Sam took it, “Ok, well… let me try,” he sat down on the floor.

In half an hour the little closet was assembled, filled, and all the papers and tags stuffed into recycling. As Sam pulled out the bread to make some toast the phone rang. It was Annie’s friend Jane. Annie went into the other room to talk to her.

Just as Sam got to the doorway with his toast, he heard Annie giggle. Stopping to listen because he loved the way she giggled, he heard her say, “It went exactly the way you said it would. I pretended I didn’t understand the instructions, and Sam ended up building the whole thing for me!”

Sam was shocked! But also pleased, and he decided right then and there to pretend he never heard it. The job was done, and in actuality, he also had a few secrets of his own… and so goes a marriage.
