A Moment in Life

“Call the police!” called a voice from the living room. Henry rolled his eyes.

Looking down at his half made sandwich, he dropped the knife and went into the living room trying to seem serious.

“Why Mum, what is it?” he said, in as he rushed in and with as serious a voice as he could muster, given he was pretty hungry at the moment…”

“A burglar is trying to get in!” she practically whispered now.

Thinking she must be trying not to let the burglar hear that someone was here, even though she had literally just screamed ‘call the police,’ he whispered back, “Where is he?”

His mother looked at him, squinting a bit, “Who says it’s a man? Can only men be burglars?” she said, now in her normal voice.

“No Mom,” he said as his brain spun, looking for the right answer, “I just saw a man outside that I didn’t know, so I thought it might be him!”

“Oh, maybe it was Mr. Daniels. He got a haircut yesterday, it really makes him look differently.”

“I bet that was it,” Henry said. “Do you want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I was just making one…”

“That would be lovely,” Mom said, the burglar apparently forgotten.

Henry smiled and went back to the kitchen. His mother had issues, but he was getting better and better at addressing them.

Mom smiled too. Henry was in pain in the petutie always trying to ‘take care’ of her. But, she knew all his buttons, like the one that would get him to make her a sandwich because she was just too comfortable sitting there with her new library book to get up right then, but still hungry.

Poor Henry…
