an experiment

The human gene manipulation station is almost complete. We are looking for volunteers to try it out.
The man at the podium scanned the room for a show of hands. There were none.

“Why don’t you get in it and demonstrate it first.” Someone in the audience shouted.
“You show us!” others chirped in.

He looked at the two assistants dressed in white lab coats and holding I- pads. They each shook their heads to discourage him.

“I have faith in this device, so, if it is me that must demonstrate it, I suppose, I will do it.
I want to make this happen. My original goal is still the same. Humans are no longer limited by our genetic codes. Say, I wish to have gills. Ka Zam, I have gills. If you want claws, just enter it here. In a few short hours it will be possible. “
“How much does a transformation cost?”

"For today only it is free to all who wish to be enhanced. Tomorrow no one in this room will be able to afford it. What do you say? Anyone want to be the first enhanced and improved human.?”

One small middle-aged woman stepped up. She felt a visceral need to try it. “What if it works?” She reasoned.

“How do you want to be enhanced?” The speaker asked the woman.
“How many can I install?”
“Any or all on the list.”
“Oh okay. Give me wings to fly, gills to swim and the camouflage features of the octopus.”

“Interesting choices.” He spoke.
He entered the information in his device then led her towards the machine with a see-through door. “But, first “an assistant said,” you need to strip down and remove all your jewelry and any items such as contact lenses and teeth. He led her to a cubical and handed her a gown of an unusual material to cover up with.
Then into the machine she stepped. Just as the door closed, she began to panic.

The auditorium was silent. A projected view allowed everyone to see all angles of the transformation process. Tubes attached to her spine, and she screamed then fainted. Her body folded into a small ball on the floor.
Then a misty fog filled the cell. Something was happening but the witnesses couldn’t see clearly. Then a feathered wing slapped the window.
When the fog cleared the room was empty. And when the scientists opened the door, They heard a swoosh and felt a blast of air. The invisible beast flew away. Never to be seen again.
The end.
