The Good In Advertising

Colette needed a sign.

“A nudge if you will,” she’d said to a random stranger. When they nodded, she went on with her search, whistling tunelessly.

“I need a jumpstart. What do I do now? An English degree that’s so new the ink is still wet won’t get me money to live on.”

Her uncertainty kept her desire to write suppressed.

“I must make money, until I finish writing my book; but how?”

She stopped when she saw the billboard.

“Make money writing jingles, slogans or short verse” she read carefully.

Taking out her notebook, she chewed on her pencil eraser in thought. Abruptly, she began to scribble. When she’d filled three pages, she dialed the number from the billboard.

“We pay ten cents a word, if we like what you’ve written,” the man on the phone told her. He gave her an address to send her ideas to.

“Do you return what you decide not to use?”

“No time for that nonsense!”

Sighing, she hung up the phone and started for home. As she was passing a mega craft mart, she had an idea. Going in, she found what she wanted.

“Gotta spend some money to make money,” she said as she checked the receipt reluctantly.

The next day, she went for a walk proudly sporting the button badge she’d made last night.

“When in doubt, send in the clowns!” it read.

In minutes, she was swarmed with people wanting to know where they could get one.

“I’ll be at Sherwood Mills Market starting this Saturday; look for Good Advertised.”

“I better get to work with my badge making machine. Hope I have enough materials to fill a booth. I gotta get a booth for that matter!” she told herself excitedly as she hurried home.
