a very short story about a girl who doesn't belong
The music was loud and pounding and the people on the floor pulsed with the beat. The sweat on their bodies glistened making them look as if they were glowing. Alcohol was being freely passed from person to person in different shaped bottles and glasses, and I knew that drugs were most certainly being done in the dark corners of the room.

I sat at one of the tables that was not being used for mini dance floors and took it all in. I usually didn’t come to parties like this, but it was the end of my senior year and I decided that I should go to at least one before I left my childhood behind. I was the book worm of the class and even then I had Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” in my lap. I opened it,lost in the world of Boo Radley, Scout, and Jem, when a couple of girls came and sat at the table next to me.

I gave them just a quick glance and dropped my head. I wasn’t like them., I wasn’t like any of the people here. I should have just stayed home. But my friend Casey managed to talk me into it. Made it even sound like it was going to be a good time. I shifted my weight and looked around for him. I wanted to go home. I knew that everyone was staring at me or watching me and making fun. I finally spotted him and signaled for him to come over. It only took the look on my face for him to know that I wanted out.

“All right Stacy, we'll go home. I wasn’t having all that much fun anyway,” he said as he put his coat on that I had been holding for him. He released the break on my wheelchair and pushed me out of the loudness of the party into the quiet of the night.
