A sonnet originally written for English class. I liked it & decided to put it in my port.
Oh, Euterpe and Polyhymnia,
I pray thee aid me in my quest for song;
For if I were to sing Alleluia,
I should be joyful as a bird ‘ere long.

To warble all the live-long day ‘twould rate
For me the utmost joy, floating me up
Unto the outstretched arms of heaven’s gate.
Such welcome filleth to the brim my cup.

If ever departs music, suffer I;
And with it gone, I would not linger long.
And all the beaut’ous melodies shall die;
For they do not exist without sweet song.

If ever I feel down and in a hole,
‘Tis music will uplift and salve my soul.

Author's Note: Euterpe and Polyhymnia are the Greek muses of lyric poetry and songs to the gods, respectively.
