The Fifties

The sun rises
A spy comes in from the cold
Hula Hoops Whirl
Sirens wail
Telling us its noon

Russia the bear
Democracy to save
Korea’s a mission
McCarthy comes visiting
Salem revisited

Conservatives rule
Dress right and you pass
No mixing at school
Beatniks, Birchers and Clan
Show us the extremes

TV is black and white
The new kid in town
I Love Lucy
Amos and Andy
No reruns around

Music a changing
Kids are dancing in the gym
Pat Boone, Alan Freed, Bill Haley and Elvis
From Country and Blues
Rock and Roll is shiftin my pelvis

Cars have muscles
Fuel not a problem
“Get your kicks on route 66”
Reading Burma Shave memorabilia

“Soap
May do
For lads with fuzz
But sir, you ain't
The kid you wuz,
Burma-Shave”
