Another slant on patriotism.
The Patriot
In a small mournful valley
Cool mist-shrouded day
Bunch a small group of people
Now they bow down to pray

Bugle note wafting o’er them
Plumes of smoke in the air
Trace of Honor Guard tribute
To a love lying there

‘Tis to honor a young man
Felled so far away
Brought home to this setting
Where we gather this day

A husband, a father, a comrade, a son
All are lost to us save
For memories now shared
As we pause near his grave

As we ask ourselves “Why?”
In a world far away
There treads a young woman
Crowded market so gay

And just before ending
Many lives gathered there
“For God, For Country!”
It shatters the air
