It's All Just A Mystery To Me

A sock without a mate.
An empty shoe
on the side of the road
near a single couch cushion

Adam and Eve beget whom?
Crayon-colored walls
in kindergarten.
An adolescent with a gun.
Is the choice a baby or
is there life after death?
Cain and Abel.

Help me out here, God.

Who invented dog years?
Is it cruel to be carnivorous?
Unidentified Flying Saucers,
light years, and letters to Santa.
The Bermuda Triangle.
Elvis and Howard Hughes.

Who made yellow and blue?
Why is green envy?
A mother can kill her babies.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Are you here, God?

A haunted empty house.
The beggar on the street.
Angels, Guardians,
people with swollen bellies.
Men in politics.
Wives who know their place.
Mothers on welfare.
Pedophiles and the I. R. S.,
J. F. K.?
Suicide, sodomy, and rape.

Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake…

Fill in the blank.
