A late encounter.

She took a step into the moonlight. "He's late" -she thought shaking her head. "Always... always late"- she said to herself. She walked further out onto the pier, admiring the way the moon reflected off of the tiny waves crashing against the break walls. She brushed a stray hair from her eyes which focused on the mystery of the glistening rocks peaking above the water's surface. It was a calm night. Suddenly she was aware of the quietness- and in the quiet, the memories flooded back. Not dreadful memories. Not ones that left her cringing with clenched fists. But, these were the most bittersweet of memories. A reminder of why she fell for him in the first place. She realized her eyes had been closed for quite some time now. She opened them, squinting at the glowing clouds before her. She shook her head. She didn't want to feel this way. She didn't want to even realize that she felt this way.
Empty.
She heard footsteps behind her. The thoughts echoing in her head had drowned out all outside noise until now.
"Hey, you." He said.
"Those eyes" -she thought. She was looking into them now, this was real. She hugged him.
Slowly.
Taking a step back, she watched as he smiled. It was then that she knew it was okay. Her insides became full again-warm again. The hollow void was replaced with something she could feel. Something that was meant to be there all along.
