A dream sequence that starts a story - Confused or obvious?
The following is a short dream I am thinking of giving a character at the start of a story, but I am unsure of how effective it is or how much impact it makes on the reader.

I appreciate any and all responses on this, from what it makes you think and feel (yourself or for the character) to phrasing and grammer (right, wrong or even better/alternative suggestions).

Enjoy.

Red blurred through his mind, visions of red mixed with grey tones and shapes he could almost recognise. People, places, faces, bodies, all were splashed with red as they passed him. Or was he moving past them? The images, all familiar and yet not, were blurred and washed in shades of grey that obscured the details. Everywhere he looked red sliced into the grey. Was this him? Now? His memories? Or was this something else, someone else’s memories thrust upon him in his dreams? Around him all became red like ink spreading through water. What had he done? No! What had he seen? The images faded as black descended across his vision. The first sound touched his ears like a final twist of a knife in an already fatal wound. Mad, manic laughter followed him into the darkness. Was that his voice? No! He had never sounded like that. Then who, what?
