unexpected love twist, poem, contest item
UNEXPECTED

One man was promised her hand.
But another stole her heart.
Suddenly two lives torn asunder.
Two others never would part.

A drive to the beach.
A walk on the sand.
A note on the door:
"No wedding as planned."

The families were stunned.
The guests were confused.
The bride had eloped,
But not with the groom.

Forty years now have passed.
They have never looked back.
Though life has brought pain,
They've never kept track
of the insults or wrongs,
the indignities or rights,
"Forgive and forget"
Lets them sleep sound each night.

Their children are grateful
For a heritage of love,
Committment and trust,
Sealed with faith from Above.

Holding hands as they enter
Their golden years,
Hearts forever entwined
By laughter and tears.
