Contest Entry for : You're The Star!
PROMT ONE:
All day the rain has been coming down relentlessly. At 10:00 PM, with the sun down but the rain still coming, you’re ready to go to bed. On your way to your room, you hear a strange noise coming from the front door. A scratching accompanied by a horrible wet-gurgling sound.

I was sullen, frustrated and not only that but dreadfully lonely. The rain pattered on my window. I was annoyed by that sound. Rain in the middle of summer was enough to ruin my mood, especially if it was raining the entire darn day. My parents had to go away for a few days, and I was here alone. It had been my decision, after hours of persuasion that I was old enough not to starve to death in 3 days. I walked quickly up the old squeaky stairs of our house and flew into my room. The thunder clashed and I gave a nervous jump.
My ears caught a barely audible sound. I froze. Now I could hear the sound loud and clear. It was getting louder with every unendurable second. There was a splashing sound too. I stood there listening to it for what seemed like hours. It stopped. Silence. My heart was beating within my head and my breathing was labored. “It was just a hallucination or…or a neighbor outside or something” I stated out loud. I said it as a fact but inside my head I hardly believed myself. I tiptoed my window and looked outside. My window provided a full view of the front of our house and at that moment I was most grateful that it did. I surveyed the street and the front steps, nothing there. The neighbors weren’t home either so I was all alone. Alone. I sat down on my bed and sighed. “Silly me, at the slightest sound of anything I begin panicking.” I said to myself, exasperated.
I took the covers off my bed and slowly walked toward the bathroom door. I froze for a second; trying to listen intently if the sound had come back. But it was silent as it was when it stopped and I smiled. I took a step, Scratch! I jumped, and spun around to face the staircase. Yes, the sound was there again. I collected my courage and dashed downstairs. The sound was so much louder here! I took the bat we kept behind the rubber plant for emergencies. “Boy is it heavy!” I exclaimed. Dragging the bat with me I walked toward the source of the sound. It was the front door. It happed so quickly; I opened the door, saw a figure, closed my eyes and swung my bat at it. Then when I was sure I hit it I opened my eyes. I blinked several times and looked outside. There was nothing there. I stepped outside and was immediately drenched in rain. There was nothing there. Feeling mystified I walked back inside and put the bat back in place. I locked the door and walked upstairs. I was still panting from the hitting attempt and flung myself onto my bed.
The next morning I woke and the events of that night seemed to be like a dream. I decided not to tell my parents about it, sure that they will never leave my home alone after hearing the story. I was watching the news that morning. There had been several reports of the same phenomenon as mine all over the city.
