"Found" poem, words from Elie Wiesel's "Night", my own interpretation
The black inheritance
The yellow star, the red mark
Anguish in the hot summer sun
As the smell of burning flesh
Made a mockery
Of the few white clouds
That descended upon us

We were lucky
Not to be left alone
Hand in hand
We placed the death mask
With infinite tenderness upon each other's faces
The body, the starved stomach
Was no longer afraid of death

We burned like straw
We crawled like worms
We were men
We were leprous dogs
A promise of the gallows
A curse of the eternal remembrance
And in the end
The Angel of Death gazed coldly upon us
But more painful still
Were the blind eyes
Of our brothers
