coloring with Sis and Mom
Sitting on the floor of my tiny bedroom,
My 8 year-old hand reaches for a crayon;
Shall I pick violet or indigo?
Sis is on my right, Mom on my left
And we’re coloring horses.
Mom loves horses,
And as my watchful eyes follow her hand,
I see her perfectly colored picture;
She’s so good at staying in the lines.

My hand skips over the sea of colors,
Blue, green, orange, red,
All mixed in a yellow cardboard box.
My slim fingers rest on maroon,
My current favorite color,
And a big grin plays on my lips -
A perfect color for a horse.

I color the grass emerald,
And think of Dorothy.
The horse’s hooves become
Ruby-red in honor of magical slippers.
The horse’s eye stands out
With a clumsy circle of sapphire.

Sis’s sky is a mesh of colors,
As she inserts a rainbow
Falling gently through the saffron sky,
Under the glistening marigold sun.
Our scenes are so different:
Mom with her perfection,
Sis with her idealism.
I giggle and continue on,
Painting a scene of love and color.
