Chapter Three: Jenny

It is nine o' clock at night on a cold and rainy Thursday, a day after the murder of Big M. At St. Jude’s hospital, in room 344, lies a very badly beaten and unconscious girl who looks to be in her early twentys and of asian descent. Two doctors stand next to her talking quietly.

“What do you think? Will she ever come out of it?” said the first.

“At this rate, it doesn’t look good. The people who did this to her really did a number. She’s lucky to be alive at all,” replies the second. “Come on. We have to finish our rounds.

The doctors turn and leave, shutting the lights off and closing the door on the way out. A few moments go by. The only sound that fills the room is the beeping of the heart monitor. The closet door next to the bed quietly creaks open, and out steps Jimmy. He moves quietly over to the comatose women, and pulls a chair up next to the bed.

“Hey Jenny. How you doing?” Jimmy asks without expecting a response. “I know I look like hell, hey, but looks aren’t everything right baby? Other then that I‘ve been doing ok. Yazzie, you remember Yazzie right? Well I’ve been holing up with him since the drive - by. He’s been hiding me in his apartment. I owe him my life. You don’t mind if I smoke, do you? ”

He leans back and lights a cigarette, bluntly ignoring the please don’t smoke signs. He stares at her for a minute, taking in all her injuries at once. The bruises on her face, the one long cut across her left cheek, her one eye was completley swollen shut, and the fact that there are tubes sticking every which way from her didn't help. Jimmy pushes a strand of hair out of Jenny's eyes. At this moment Jimmy feels like crying.

“I’m sorry Jenny. I’m sorry you I got you involved. I should’ve been home with you when they came. If I was, then maybe you wouldn’t be here and Brandon would still be alive. This is my fault. All my fault.”

At this point Jimmy loses all control, and begins to sob uncontrollably, soaking his bandages. As quickly as he starts crying, he stops, and then a familiar feeling washes over him again. It is rage. Lately he has been losing control of his anger more easily than ever, and the trigger seems to be every time he thinks of Lance and the pain hes caused.

“This is his fault, not mine! I’ll kill him and every piece of scum thats with him! They're all going down for what they did to us baby! I swear I’ll make everything right!” Jimmy’s anger starts to fade when he looks at her. He sits down completely mellowed out.

"I can never stay angry when I look at you," he says, while putting out his cigarette.
“Sorry baby, but I won't be able to see you tomorrow. I got a real good lead, and if it’s solid I’ll be able to set things right again.”

Outside the door Jimmy can hear voices, and see shadows shifting from underneath it. "I guess I'll see you later Jenny," says Jimmy as he turns.

After a few a seconds a doctor walks in, talking to a nurse.

“…I left my charts. Go ahead I’ll catch up soon.” The doctor enters the room, as the nurse walks off down the hall. The doctor picks up his charts and begins to leave when something catches his eye.

“Who left the window open?” the doctor says. He shrugs and closes it.

OUTSIDE

A man in a tattered trench coat makes his way through the pouring rain. He stops and looks back at the hospital.

"I swear I'll make everything right Jenny. Even if it kills me," says Jimmy as he turns and continues his long trek back to the apartment.
