Summary of this Book...
In one of the greatest war classics of all time, author Erich Maria Remarque relates the horror and futility of war, as well as the courage and helplessness of those caught up in it.

The story is set during World War 1 and follows the experiences of Paul Bäumer and his comrades on the Front. As conditions deteriorate, Paul questions the meaning of war, of life and death, and what is truly the "enemy".
This type of Book is good for...
As a classic, I recommend it to all people of all ages, but because of war themes, 13+.
I especially liked...
This isn't a book about war. It's a book about humanity. Erich Maria Remarque reaches into the hearts and minds of men pushed to their limits, men who live only for their bread and the man next to them, men who are confused about who or what they are fighting.

Paul Bäumer makes a journey in his mind as he seeks to understand the events he is caught up in. There are a few particularly vivid scenes in this book. Once when Paul is trapped in No Man's Land with a dying enemy soldier next to him, he struggles with his feelings towards the soldier. Should he be hostile or sympathetic towards him? Another time, when Paul is home on leave, he walks through the town and describes how estranged it feels to him, and how warped the views of his neighbours, friends and family are.

Also, viewing life in the trenches of World War I through a German's eyes proved an interesting read, a reminder that often in war there are no "bad guys" or "good guys".
I didn't like...
Sometimes the names were difficult to remember and match to the characters and their stories. I would have liked to know just a little bit more about some of the other characters, and even the protagonist himself, but apart from that I couldn't pick any faults in it.
This Book made me feel...
I was left with a deepened understanding, strengthened views and definitely inspired. I was also saddened because although we can stop war, we can't change the heart of man.
The author of this Book...
Remarque is blunt and gritty, but compassionate and gentle. He does not once interfere in the story to express his views, but lets the reader discover and interpret for him/herself.
I recommend this Book because...
Whether you are into classics or not, this book is a must-read. All Quiet On The Western Front is insightful, profound and heart-moving, and rich in imagery and emotion.
I don't recommend this Book because...
There is no glory or gory in this novel, so if you're after an action-packed thriller or a light, fluffy read, this is definitely not for you. It lacks all the shallowness of so many novels.
Further Comments...
The book is gripping and fascinating, and yes, you will shed a few tears along the way. In one chapter, I laughed so much I nearly cried. So it's not barren of humour either.

I found this book wonderful to read. The plot flows smoothly, the prose is striking and the characters genuine, with all their faults and fears and strengths.

I am definitely better off having read it, and although I can't promise you'll like it, it will touch you to the core.

The ending is haunting and its message unforgettable.
