Summary of this Book...
I liked this book a lot because it reads like poetry. Although the traditional plot lines are resisted in the storytelling, the combination of experiences, memories, and reflections create a style that is stunning and impressionistic.

All the lyricism aside, the author sees her characters as real people. During the 1970s, the main character August makes three good friends in Brooklyn Sylvia, Angela, and Gigi. In addition to her brother, all other characters that show up and disappear leave an impression on her.

The book begins with the adult August--who has become an anthropologist--returning to New York to bury her father and running into Sylvia on the subway. The rest of the book is made up of flashbacks and remembrances of August’s earlier days. A repeating pattern shows in the main character’s child and teen mode of relentless belief that her mother will return because she didn’t really die, and this alone gives this book a heart-rending quality.
I especially liked...
the author's style and her use of the language
This Book made me feel...
for the characters.
I recommend this Book because...
I think it will become a classic and it is highly literary. Also, it is a very short read. The author's economy of word use is amazing.
