Summary of this DVD...
This is the complete seasons of Breaking Bad. It's a show about a high school chemistry teacher, Walter White, who gets a diagnosis of lung cancer. This shoots a hole right through his world. Happily married, with a teenage son and another baby on the way, Walter White doesn't deal well with his diagnosis. He doesn't tell anyone, at first, and all he can think is needs to make as much money as possible for his wife and children, before he dies. So, of course, the obvious answer is to use his chemistry knowledge and manufacture some crystal meth. Who better to enlist the help of than his former drop out pupil, Jesse.

It is the relationship between these two men that makes the drama as good as it is. Whilst Jesse acts tough and streetwise, the truth is he's little more than a scared kid. His character is so endearing. I fell in love with him very quickly.

Across the seasons, we see Walter White quickly rise to the top of his game, gaining the respect and hatred of fellow drug dealers and manufacturers. There is the added difficulty of his brother in law, the DEA Agent, Hank.

As Walter gets more and more out of control, as the power goes to his head, it's no longer about making money to look after his family. He far surpasses the amount of money he previously wanted. Whereas Jesse wants to stop, Walter always continues.

By the end, it's a race to see whether Walter will get away from everything alive, or will somebody stop him first?
This type of DVD is good for...
People who love tough, gritty drama. But it's not all about the drama, it has a lot of humour, particularly in the first seasons. It gets darker (to its detriment, I think) towards the end.
I especially liked...
The humour. There are some great scenes with Walter and Jesse cooking in their caravan and getting themselves into the most bizarre situations. They employ the help of lawyer Saul Goodman, who is even more crooked than them.

I especially liked Jesse. Aaron Paul. Lovely.
I didn't like...
The darkness toward the end. I understand everything was coming to a head, and the writers couldn't have kept it all light, but it just felt a little more oppressive and less fun in the last couple of seasons.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
Talk about it to someone else who had watched it. I wanted to recommend it, so that I could talk to them.
The cast of this DVD...
Bryan Cranston plays Walter White, and he does a great job of showing the difference in shades within his character. He does a great job of showing a man unravelling. The rest of the cast are good. I wasn't sure about Anna Gunn who played Walter's wife, Skyler. It's not that she was a bad actor, it was just that I found it really hard to feel sorry for her. Even when, morally, she won arguments hands down, I just couldn't bring myself to feel for her.
I recommend this DVD because...
It's a great watch. It's really touch and tackles a serious subject. But, the humour and the relationship between Walter and Jesse counter that grittiness. It's really, really entertaining.
