Summary of this Book...
The story reveals detailed backstory of the horse racing world and how it worked and how, in 1973 Secretariat became a champion, winning the Triple Crown, now holding the record for the fastest time in the Derby and the Belmont. It reveals a lot of detail on the families involved in the racing world, the lineages of horses and how the system worked. The true story of Secretariat, one of the 50 greatest athletes of the century, non human of course, as chosen by the ESPNS, is covered within these pages. The book includes the short story "Pure Heart", a tribute by the author, after the death of this amazing horse. Award winning book in 1975.
This type of Book is good for...
People who are interested in understanding the Horse Racing community, enjoy historical research on this, and want to know the real story of Secretariat. It will be interesting to horse racing enthusiasts as well. Not if you are looking for an easy quick look at the subject.
I especially liked...
Research was well done and the book revealed much that was not in the Movie Version. I liked the short story which encapsulated Secretariat's role in history.
Very well documented. William Nack knows his stuff.
I didn't like...
I thought the book would be more streamlined in telling the story of Secretariat and had to read through a lot to get to the parts about him. It was slow to get started but once into it I saw how the background did add to the understanding of milieu.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Share with some family members who watched the real Secretariat race!
The author of this Book...
William Nack, a sports writer, who was there when Secretariat rose to fame.
an American journalist and author. He wrote about sports, politics and the environment at Newsday for 11 years. He joined Sports Illustrated in 1978 as an investigative reporter and general feature writer and has several awards for his work including this 1975 Book Secretariat! He mainly covered horse racing and was an adviser on the 2010 Secretariat movie. He died in 2018 at age 77. His love and understanding of the horse world shone through his work.
I recommend this Book because...
I appreciate knowing the background behind the famous events. I love horses.
