Summary of this Book...
This is a hard-to-put down and extraordinarily interesting and unique book about a strong, independent woman with blue skin facing racism and all kinds of other trials in the wilds of historic Kentucky. Before reading this book I don't think I even knew that healthy people could have blue skin or that human blood could be any color except red. I don't think I knew about the courageous book women either.
This type of Book is good for...
People with an interest in history, strong women, and/or overcoming adversity.
I especially liked...
Bluet, aka Cussy Mary, the main heroine. I admired her character, selfless nature, sacrifices and strong will.
Her father made one terribly bad decision that might have cost her life but other than that I really liked him too. And Queenie and Jackson were fantastic characters as well.
I didn't like...
I hated that poor decision by her father and I know that times were different then but I personally would have been more likely to run away and make my own way in the world that submitting to that marriage. Of course, I can't really know what it was like to live in that time or with blue skin. It would be mighty hard to go unnoticed with blue skin.
When I finished n/a this Book I wanted to...
Pray for all the people suffering from discrimination and for changed hearts on those who are prejudiced.
This Book made me feel...
Pretty tense, most of the time. But there were some sweet moments of friendship and some wonderful times of people appreciating all the book lady did for them. Cussy Mary was a really admirable character.
The n/a of this Book...
Ought to win an award for this book. The cover advertised it as "an unputdownable work that holds real cultural significance" and I found that to be very true.
I recommend this Book because...
It's really eye opening.
I don't recommend this Book because...
It's not for people who can't handle a fair degree of violence, blood and crime.
Further Comments...
I have already requested another book by this author from my library.

I borrowed the hardcover copy of this book from my library. I loved the historical photos of real book women at the back of the book. I am not sure if the Kindle version includes them.
