Summary of this Book...
I think this book’s approach is brilliant. Instead of writing a how-to book this author has decided to show the readers what he means through the use of a story since the human mind is conditioned to recall stories better.

In the story, a young man, David, who has lost his way in life is beaten up by the bad guys and thrown into the sea. He is rescued and finds himself badly hurt and in the hospital. While in the hospital his mind or rather his subconscious begins to talk to him. Due to his conversations with his subconscious and later on his talks with his Aunt Sally, he succeeds to change his life because he is shown the way to change his thinking. This is the story that now much older David tells his friend Harry’s son, Logan who has asked to know more about David’s accident as a young man.

Some of the lessons David has learned and is passing on have to do with finding a dream (= a purpose) to follow, never giving up and making failures learning experiences, and paying attention to discipline. In the book, there are also guidelines and other instructions that have the headings of Basic Rules to Help you Achieve your Dreams, The Basics of Goal Setting, and the Importance of Persistence. A positive attitude and continuous learning are emphasized as well, among many other important teachings.

There are several passages I took notes on, such as: “There are two major pains in life. The pain of discipline and the pain of regret. The first weighs ounces, whereas the latter weighs tons.” Also, the importance and use of meaningful quotations are emphasized in the book.

Except one thing was disconcerting for me. It was the subconscious having an actual voice in the story, even if that voice got the reader's attention. I thought it injected the strong advice a hint of unbelievability. Yet, I can’t think of how else could the author give his advice and still make the reading fun.

The writing is clear and to the point without being boring. The story in the book is inspirational and its self-improvement advice is priceless, and with only 164 pages to read, the book is a find especially for the young, although people of any age can benefit from it.

I especially liked...
the way it makes the readers think
I didn't like...
the subconscious having an actual voice in the story, even if it gets the reader's attention because this gives the strong advice a hint of unbelievability.
