It is a very emotional story. I empathize with the boy's need to have a father around. He found that father figure in his uncle. For him, everything this vietnam veteran experienced the boy considers heroic. The way the author compares life with a chess game can be called magnificent since we all know that we have battles to bear and fight. Day by day we try to survive just to be able to understand the real meaning of life.
