pet and child, mutual loyalty
Sprayed by a skunk, home you ran;
the family wanted you far away.
Using tomatoes Mom had canned,
(It wasn't fun. It wasn't play;)

I worked tomatoes down to your skin
while smelly juice ran down the drain.
The stink remained, though somewhat thinned.
That night I closed my bedroom in

so they wouldn't smell your stinky fur.
To trap the smell, I shared my blanket,
my nose outside for cleaner air
you down under, my loyal pet.

On leaving my bedroom in the morn
perhaps you heard my brothers' scorn
that I had slept with a skunky pet --
"you've grown a stripe. Let's call the vet!!"
