I’ve been working on this poem for months now. I think I finally got it.
She has a secret smile
that touches her face
when she thinks
no one is looking:
a covert little grin
that curves slightly upward,
one corner of her mouth
elevated higher than the other
(a crooked, one-sided pull),
teeth hidden behind
the fullness of her lips
to appear inconspicuous
so that she can keep her joy
only to herself

But that subtle smile
--that sneaky smirk--
is the biggest thing in the world
it fills up the space
it radiates warmth, attracts attention
and turns heads
even when she thinks
no one is looking
(even when she thinks
I don’t see)
and I desperately wish
she would share that smile
with me
