Is digital art really an art?
"Callie! Hello! I haven't seen you in forever! Come give your uncle a hug!"
"It's good to see you too. I missed you, Uncle Daren! I believe I was five when I saw you last. That's thirteen years."
"How's college going?"
am still thinking about where to go. I'm thinking about graphics design."
"Oh?"
"Well, I've become a digital artist since we last spoke. I got the art tablet and everything. I use a free program, but maybe one day I'll switch to Photoshop. I don't know. I'm still new, but I enjoy it."
"Slow down, Callie! I am trying to think. Why do you choose digital art over real art? Wouldn't you want to use the ole paints and paper? And what's an art tablet? I am not well versed in digital art, see. . ."
"Well, um, digital art, is a real art. Just as traditional art is."
"But is it really something worth pursuing for a career?"
"It, it is, Uncle. It's just that. Everything you see, all those adds out there, were created by a digital artist. What I am interested in, well, I am also interested in creating webcomics."
"But what is a graphics tablet?"
"A graphics tablet is a mouse replacement. It's got a digital pen which, um, which makes it easier to create line art. It gives pressure sensitivity, which a mouse can't do."
"Pressure sensitivity, aye? A lot of new terms these days."
"It's like someone holding pencil. The harder you press, the thicker the lines are. Because if someone was drawing something like hair, it would make it a little odd if the lines were too consistent."
"But why wouldn't you want to do real art?"
"Digital art is as real as traditional art."
"Why do you say so? Digital art is much easier than traditional art. Don't you need something requiring talent to make it an art?"
"What makes you think that digital art doesn't require talent? Digital art needs it's own special skills. See, um, just because you have a computer and all the fancy gear doesn't mean you'll be any good. You can't just buy a Cintiq, an actual tablet with the drawings on screen, and expect to become the best digital artist of your time. There's more to it than that. You need your own skills for it."
"I've never heard of this before. See, you're so smart, Callie. I've never known this. However, I still think your ole Uncle is having a hard time."
"What defines an art, in your opinion?"
"I wouldn' know, Cal. You taught me a new thing just now? What do you consider art? Gosh, the definition is always changing."
"Art is merely a form of self expression. In that case, digital art is just another art. It's just another way of expressing oneself. No, it isn't a replacement for traditional art, but it is a separate form. Like the difference between classical music and modern pop music."
