Nothing last forever.
There’s a tombstone in Graceland Cemetary,
not especially grand, though the oak tree
over it demands attention.
There’s a gash in its side festering
with rot. They’re chopping it down tomorrow
the century-old girl
reduced to a stump in minutes.
The tombstone will still be there
more unremarkable than ever
the young girl still under it, undisturbed
even as her father’s last gift
to her
is being carved into affordable furniture.
