Sometimes the lights of the big city are not as bright as they appear from afar.
Her windows opened to a changeless world,
Cornfields and curtains the same patterned scheme.
A square life, she was just a gingham girl,
But deep inside she had red carpet dreams.

At eighteen they gave her a cap and gown.
The diploma said life would now unfurl.
She took a job as a waitress in town,
After all, she was just a gingham girl.

Chattering people, clattering dishes,
Men who eyed her with a salacious gleam.
She pocketed tips to fund her wishes,
For deep in her heart lived red carpet dreams.

One day when her spirits and savings were high,
She packed all her bags, did this small town girl,
Boarded a Greyhound and said her goodbyes,
To the square life of her gingham world.

The bus rolled on through the dotted white lines,
Her excitement grew with each bend and turn,
Till into view came the Hollywood sign,
Each letter into her memory burned.

She sought fame and fortune in auditions,
Beauty as an asset was bittersweet.
Interviews soon became propositions,
Every effort she made met with defeat.

With money nearly gone, her spirits down,
She needed a job that was sure to pay.
A job as a waitress was all she found,
Serving would-be stars in a small cafe.

Chattering people, clattering dishes,
Men who eyed her with a salacious gleam.
She pocketed tips to fund her wishes,
Of cornfields and fishing in clear, cold streams.

The bright lights of the city left behind,
The bus droned its way to a well-known world.
She knew it was there her future she’d find,
After all, she was just a gingham girl.
