Performing the Mountains of Madness

Performing the Mountains of Madness

39

Jason Lee was a composer
writing symphonic music
That no one would ever hear

He was obsessed with HP Lovecraft
Wanted to write the ultimate tone poem
Based on Lovecraftian themes

He found it in an occult bookstore
The infamous Necromicron
And decided that in his
symphonic tone poem

it would end with the chorus
chanting the words
to summon Cthulu
from his tomb

buried deep underneath
the pentagon

The day came for the world's premier
Hundreds of HP Lovecraft fans
Showed up dressed in Cthulu costumes
Waiting for the final ending

The chorus started chanting
Oh Cthulu great Cthulu
Merciful old God
We summon you
Wake up from your slumbers

Cthulu appeared
His evil face
Appeared on every screen
In the world

Thank you for rescuing me
I am Cthulhu
Your new God
You will obey me
Or you will all die

NEW PROMPT

On September 22nd, 1869, Wagner's Das Rheingold, the first of the four parts of his famous Der Ring des Nibelungen, was performed for the first time.

Write a story or poem for which the setting is a cultural musical event (opera, symphony, concert, etc) and in which that location has a meaningful impact on the story. (I.e. you couldn't just switch the setting to, e.g., a baseball game and leave everything else unchanged.)

As always, be creative! Is this an opera on an alien world, or are aliens attending a rock concert on earth? Is this a potentially deadly elven symphony? Or a zombie jamboree? Or the kids' middle school orchestra concert in which something unexpected happens? Etc.
