Night Flight

“Are you ready, Pinky?”

“Zoik,” came the answer.

The Brain, lab rat extraordinaire, carefully slid the small kite out the window, that both mice had managed to open just enough to do so. As the guiding wire unspooled, he threaded a key onto it and sent it up until it was halfway between the spool and the kite.

“If I can get the coming lightning storm to power the kite with its electricity, it should be able to get to the moon. Of course, if my scheme fails, it will plummet to the earth and never make it anywhere. As for the pilot, Pinky, I will miss him, but I’m willing to make sacrifices to take over the world!”

The kite headed straight into the raging storm while Brain manipulated the wire so the key would be struck just right. In his distracted state, he didn’t hear the sizzle that travelled down toward him. As it zapped him, he just managed to shout:

“Pinky! Help!”

With a mighty roll of his scrawny body, his friend made the kite turn and head back to the window. When it hit the glass, it shattered it. Pinky lay near Brain, bleeding but alive. The maniacal rat dragged himself to his side, dazed and confused.

“Pinky, speak to me! Did you make it to the moon? What was it like?”

“No green cheese,” his faithful friend managed to squeak before passing out.

The two lab rats laid together until morning. When the light hit Brain’s eyes he winced and sat up.

Pinky was already running on their wheel while grinning inanely and making wacky faces.

“What are we going to do today, Brain?”

“What we do every day, Pinky. Try to take over the world!”
