BYWAYS VERSUS HIGHWAYS

“Let’s go, time’s a-wasting!” Connor Henderson bellowed at his wife as he started the car.

Harried and exhausted, Becky got in the car. She stared at her husband of more years than she cared to remember. She cleared her throat. He turned to look at her.

“What?”

She opened her mouth, decided to pick her battles and closed it. In less time than it should have taken, they were leaving the city limits and Connor’s gas foot pressed to the floor.

“Did you see that speed limit sign?”

“Those are only suggestions.”

After a while, Becky ventured another suggestion.

“Why don’t you pull over at the next rest stop and let me drive?”

Connor yawned.

“I could use a short nap,” he said as he turned off the road.

As soon as they gassed up and got drinks and snacks, the pair was back in the car, with Becky at the wheel. When her husband began to snore, she checked the attractions brochure she’d picked up at the gas station.

“These are nearby!”

When she reached the correct sideroad, she turned. The world’s largest ball of yarn was a sight to see. Connor slept on.

A little further on, was the world’s smallest violin. Still Connor slept. At the next attraction, she hit a pothole and her husband awakened. She got out of the car before he could move and was raptly gazing at a giant Pysanky.

Hearing his tread behind her, Becky didn’t budge.

“We don’t have time for this,” Connor began.

“The wedding isn’t for days. The trip can be more leisurely since it’s not close family. Besides, it takes about eight hours.”

Connor stared in awe at the beautiful egg.

“Wow!” he said with a whistle.

That’s when Becky knew she’d made her point.
