Sophie is a daredevil She is dared to climb the fence that separates Humans from Vampires |
| Before the drought of 1964 the vampires mostly stuck to the west side and the outskirts of town. The humans stayed on the east side and rarely left town, not because of fear but more like they were following an unspoken law. After the drought, that killed the plants and wiped out the livestock, the vampires main source of food, all that changed. The vampires invaded the human’s part of town. Violent attacks killed or transformed over half the town’s population and the remaining half housed up and were hardly ever seen, the many still died weekly. When deliveries stopped coming and delivery men going into the town disappeared, the outside world understood what was happening. They had warned the people of this town that coexisting with vampires was dangerous, but the townspeople had insisted on allowing the endangered species to live. Now surrounding towns and cities sent their reinforcements. The vampires were herded into a tiny area destined to be killed but the townspeople, having come out of hiding, explained about the drought and insisted that no vampires be slain. Thus the chain-link fence went up. It ran down the middle of main street, giving the vampires control of their side of town again, and out into the desert a ways before circling back around and connecting in front of the town hall with a padlocked gate. The key to this gate was to be passed down through the mayor’s children, or future mayors of the town, and the gate was never to be opened. Many vampires accepted their punishment and ate out of the many crates of food the humans provided them yearly, but others got angry and climbed the fence only to be killed after their first one or two meals. As time progressed and knowledge of technology was expanded the humans added new devices to the fence that would shock any vampires that touched the fence, and set them on fire if they started to climb it, killing them instantly. It was completely harmless to humans. Eventually the rebelling vampires stopped coming over the fence and just stood on the other side swearing to have revenge and cursing. Soon though even a glimpse of a vampire became a rare sight and the massacre of 1965 was forgotten, and the key, though still being passed down lost its meaning. Inside the fence the vampires waited their time was coming and when it did, they would be free. |
