Bear Lake Monster ♥ Folklore Genre
Bear Lake Monster ♥ A Utah Ghost Story ♥

"Hey, read this." Shoving the newspaper under Sam's nose, Ben sat back to watch his reaction.

Sam read aloud, "The remains of a large unidentified creature, resembling a dinosaur, was found this morning on the western shore of Bear Lake, giving rise to many rumors that concerned the legendary monster."

"Remember when I wrote a poem on it for a school assignment? I dug it out just to refresh my memory," Ben said. "This was back in 2008."

Sam took the poem and read it out loud.

"Did you hear about the tale of the Bear Lake Monster?
It could swim faster than a horse can run,
“Be careful when you go near the water,” said a tipster,
“Because you may find yourself chased by one.”

Now the monster's a huge snake, ninety feet long,
His mouth is big enough to swallow a man whole,
It ears stick out, his small legs scurry strong,
One guy tried killing one, but his bullets kept missing their goal.

This scared him, and he high-tailed out of there without his gun,
He told everyone the monster ate it, but that was just pure fable,
When the monster disappeared, a story begins to form,
Of Pecos Bill wrestling it, making the weather unstable.

Pecos Bill created a hurricane by flinging the monster far,
So far, it flew around the word, and landed in the Loch Ness,
Where it lives to this day, scaring many fish, even the Gar.
Bringing an end to the fable, hoped you liked it, yes?"

"Sure, I remember. We all thought it was a myth then, thinking this was too funny for words. Now, I'm not so sure." Sam walked over to sit down across from Ben. "Remember, people were attacked, and no one had any explanation as to why. Well, now we do! This discovery of a gigantic creature in Bear Lake could finally bring an end to speculation on this topic."

"Remember? We even fished on that lake! Thank goodness we didn't come across this monster. Bear Lake is very deep, with many caves down he can hide in." Ben folded up his paper, and put it back in his box of memories.

"I suppose much of Garden City has heard about this now, and are shaking in their boots as we are. Sure wished Pecos Bill did fling it into the Loch Ness," Sam said.

"You know the old theory, when there is one, there must be more." Ben took the paper to stare at the remains of a monster. "It still weighed two tons, even after being partially eaten, being it was twenty-five feet long. Well, from now on, everyone has to be more careful when they're close to Bear Lake. I wouldn't fish there anymore either, I'm going to Lake Powell."

"What's to say there aren't anything more weirder or bigger in that lake?" Sam asked. "You mentioned those caves, there could be other aquatic mammals living there."

"I guess, but we can't be scared of our own shadow." Ben laid the paper down and turned to Sam. "Let's go swimming in Bear Lake then."

"No! What's wrong with you?" Sam stared daggers at Ben. "I said stop being afraid, but not stupid. We now know what's in there, so I'm not swimming there anymore, or ever!"
