Creation Saturday: Prompt Responses Dedicated to My Mother
Saturday, May 27, 2017

“We have to watch Nana's life slipping away from her like a forgotten word. I thought I understood what's happening to her, but this isn't like being robbed a penny at a time. Memories aren't currency to spend; they're us. Age isn't stealing from my grandmother; it's slowly unwinding her.”
Shaun David Hutchinson, We Are the Ants

Create a backstory from the strangest thing you've seen at a garage sale.

Garage Sale Memories

Instructions on using slide rule

When Mom was alive, before the Alzheimer's took her mind, we went to numerous garage, yard, and junk sales. At each one you could find something strange, weird, or unusual. At a garage sale, held my one of my mother's friends, I found a slide rule. The price was $1.00, so I purchased it. I don't have to make up a back story for this because the lady, whose name I can't seem to remember, said it was her husbands. The gentleman had died and she was selling some of his stuff so that she could move into a smaller place. I don't know why I purchased it then, but I'm glad I did because I think it would make a nice object to use in a story.

Have fun with these random words: lonely, hate, narrow, fear, cobweb, silly and evanescent

Fading Memories:
To My Mother

I could hear evanescent echoes
of yesterday
in her lonely tears
each time she spoke her parents' names.

I hate the disease
that robbed her of her memories,
and robbed me
of her presence.

It was,
as if she walked down a narrow,
cobweb filled corridor
unable to see an exit.

Sometimes
silly words came out of her mouth
and we laughed,
but at other times
I heard fear in her voice
when she describe people
that weren't in the room.

As the disease progressed,
her memories
and life faded
passing into another realm.

braincell by braincell,
her memory
and personality.

Las Vegas, Nevada.

Who?
Marie Pearl Newland Darbe Sisk.
