Are you looking forward to the Winter Solstice?

Hook

What do you do on the shortest day and the longest day of the year?

About This Newsletter

In the Northern Hemisphere
we're looking forward to the Winter Solstice,
to short cold days
becoming longer and warmer.

Letter From the Editor

The winter and summer solstices prove that the Earth isn't flat. The solstices also prove that humans will find something to celebrate despite the weather conditions or the time of year.

Winter solstice
the shortest day
and the longest night of the year,
the end of harvest
in the northern hemisphere.

The winter solstice, also known as the hibernal solstice, occurs when Earth's poles reach their maximum tilt or are farther away from the sun. This condition occurs two times a year, once in the northern and again in the southern hemisphere. Traditionally, in agriculture, this solstice represents the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the sowing season.

The winter solstice is celebrated in different ways across the planet. In the past, it was celebrated by building a big bonfire and making a sacrifice for a good harvest. I suspect that in this modern, technological culture, people go shopping. Anyone who has been to a mall on December 21, will understand and laugh, because only a sense of humor will help you survive a crowded mall on the winter solstice.

Another way to celebrate the winter solstice is to gather the family and feast all night. Sweet treats are some of the foods served at these gatherings. Some of the foods served are sweet rice balls and red bean paste. The reason for staying up all night and feasting is to drive away the evil spirits.

Have you written a fantasy or science fiction story about the winter solstice? How do you spend the winter solstice and the longest night of the year? Do you remain at home curled up under a warm blanket and read? Do you gather with family and friends to feast all night? Write a story in which one of your main characters celebrates the winter solstice? Deadline: January 14, 2023. Content rating 18+.
