Why Do I Remember

Why do I remember
the footprints in the sand?

Was it the laughter we shared
that day we walked
in the Pacific Ocean surf?

The footprints we left
were soon washed away
by the ocean waves
rolling into shore.

The memories are still there--
indelible ink
on the pages of my soul--
of the last time we were together
as a happy family.
