April 10 prompt

Read it in the Sunday Papers

Write about the first major news story you remember from your childhood.

The first major news story I remember happened when I think I was in the 7th or 8th grade. An announcement came over the loudspeaker at school. Then we went home. Something about the president. There was a big announcement on the television.

Of course, this was the shooting of President John F. Kennedy. No instant news, no CNN, no 24-hour news service back then. Just three channels, NBC, ABC, CBS. The TV was full of this news for some time, I do remember that.

I grew up East of Cleveland, Ohio. I don't remember anyone in my life being much affected by the news, anyone telling me much about it. But then, this was 59 years ago, so my memory is not what it should be. My memories of my childhood are pretty fuzzy.
