Pretty Maids All in a Row

Pretty Maids All In A Row

She stood against the wall, watching all her coworkers dancing after the meal. It felt like fifth grade, those first dances when the boys were afraid to ask a girl to dance. And the girls standing near the wall, giggling among themselves and glancing at the awkward boys.

Jensen sidled up next to her. "And pretty maids all in a row."

She smiled, not taking her eyes off the dancers. "Just me and Wanda."

"Wanda is in a wheelchair. Why are you here?"

"No one wants to dance with me."

"I do. Would you?" He held out his hand.

"Is this pity?"

He chuckled. "Nah, I think you're pretty. I said that."

They moved to the dance floor and he gathered her into his arms. Jensen smiled as others danced past. Her boss, dancing with his wife smiled at her. It was the first time she'd ever seen him smile. Fancy that.

"They all think you're brilliant, you know." He murmured close to her ear.

"I didn't know. I'm just here doing a job. When the contract is over, I doubt they'll keep me." She shrugged while they moved to the music.

"They're interested."

"How do you know?"

"Let's say I have insider information."

"What does that even mean?" She was truly puzzled.

"I work here, but I actually run the company."

"Interesting."

His short laugh surprised her. "Most find it deceitful."

"No matter to me, I'm just a contractor."

"I'd like to hire you, Melinda."

"Technically I work for you already."

"I mean within the company. You have good vision. I've heard about the feedback you've been giving people."

"Suggestions." She shrugged again. "Saves time and money."

"Exactly." He looked up as the music ended. "Are you interested in becoming a Vice President?"

She looked up at him with a jolt. "VP?"

"Yep." He tugged her hand. "Say yes."

She looked at their joined hands. "Yes."
